Dangerous lake levels affecting East Texans

East Texas lakes were pretty busy for Memorial Day.

But now that the festivities are over, many are saying it's time for some rain.

Smith County Game Warden Chris Green says this weekend, everybody stayed pretty safe, but there were a few boats that got stuck on sandbars due to the low levels.

Green says on the whole, East Texas lakes are about 3 feet down.

He says this past weekend, there were a few injuries to people's feet because they were stepping on broken glass and metal where the lake water is down.

But Green says, boating - especially at night - is the main issue.

"We do have injuries, when you hit a sandbar, your gonna run up on a sandbar, shallow water and 'wham!'  You're stopping.  A lot of people either fall out of the boat, potentially get injured, some of them hit the dashboard, steering wheel, just like a vehicle," Green said.

Chris Green tells KETK, the best way to stay safe is to become very familiar with the lake you'll be boating on.

Here are some of the lake levels in our area.

LAKE FORK: Down 3.5 feet

LAKE PALESTINE: Down 2.1 feet

LAKE TYLER: Down 1.9 feet

LAKE JACKSONVILLE: Down 1.5 feet
